Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have used Ubuntu before using Wubi but, I found that I needed the extra space which I installed Ubuntu in. I have tried VirtualBox for Windows and Mac to try to full install Ubuntu, I even installed the extension pack and updated it. But it will not work, on Mac it greys out the USB device are when I try to attach it to the virtual machine. In Windows it attached but Ubuntu couldn't detect it. Unfortunately it had to be formatted to HFS as NTFS wouldn't work. Any ideas on how to get this working? It's a 1TB WD My Book Elite though I doubt you needed that info. I hope it will work or this thing will sit gathering dust forever.

It is a bit unclear, what you intend to achieve. Do you want to install Ubuntu booting from USB using Virtual Box or do you want to install Ubuntu as a virtual machine in Virtual Box and have the virtual disk on your USB drive? –  Takkat Apr 18 '13 at 10:06

Sorry, I would like to install to the actual Hard Drive, write GRUB to the MBR and boot using the Hard Drive. Only using Virtualbox as a place to hold the iso and install. –  Joshua S. Apr 21 '13 at 6:59

As we may be able to get installing Ubuntu on a physical partition from Virtual Box working it is not recommended to do so. How to install Ubuntu see: askubuntu.com/questions/6328/how-do-i-install-ubuntu –  Takkat Apr 21 '13 at 9:10

Sorry I had just lost my live USB, seeing if I could avoid buying another storage device. Thanks Takkat! –  Joshua S. Apr 25 '13 at 0:40
