although my printer (connected via USB) is recognized and shows up as the proper model under printers. Under properties the printer is enabled and I have tried to print a test page. Under printer status it says ( idle sending data to printer). I have downloaded the drivers from the brother website. The drivers were installed via gdebi. Then I went to print from the setting menu and added the printer. Is there a better way to handle this or a step I am missing.

I'd recommend to check if the printer is "Enabled". In many cases the printers are just waiting for you to enable them in order to complete the printing job. –  user123492 Nov 19 '13 at 20:06
