Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I started my upgrade as of yesterday morning and it's still hanging up. It's on a screen that says: stopping automatic crash report generation...failed And now at the very bottom it says stopping system v runlevel compatibility. PLEASE help! I am no IT person and got Ubuntu from a friend who is one, I have no clue what to do and don't want to crash my system.

Also there's a message that says:

since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job, you may also use teh start(8) utility, e.g. start S25bluetooth *pulseaudio configured for per-user sessions. Rather than invoking init scripts through/etc/init.d, use the service(8) initctl: unknonw job: S90binfmt-support.

I've had it for about 4 years (Ubuntu) and no upgrade has ever done this. The friend is in college, and I've since lost contact with him so I can't get him over here to help. I hope someone can tell me how I can just go back to my previous version as this is truly a headache!I've tried restarting my machine and I can't get past the Ubuntu screen saver nor this black screen with what's going on to even get to my desktop material. Also, this is for a desktop, I'm asking via my daughters laptop as I have no access to anything on my machine.
