I have a fresh copy of ubuntu 12.10. This is the only operating system in my notebook. It was fast when I first install it. but now a black screen with blinking cursor takes some considerable time, making my loading slow. Sometimes the ubuntu welcome screen blinks and then a black screen appears where I can not do anything( Usually at this stage I power off the notebook and start it again.) I do not have any application in my startup.

please provide further information. inspect dmesg after a slow boot and see whether any large gaps are occuring. In dmesg you will be given the seconds ofter boot in the left column with a description of what's going on on the right. You can edit your question and post the dmesg listing here. –  DrSAR Apr 15 '13 at 7:59
Install bootchart and let it analyze the boot (it would have been best to have bootchart of when it did boot quicker ;) ) Add a link to the chart to your question and we should be able to point to a specific process. –  Rinzwind Apr 15 '13 at 8:12
