Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm totally a new user of Ubuntu 12.10. I have installed it recently and when I tried opening on of my drive it shows an error something like can't mount drive.

And please tell me directly what to type in terminal as I don't have much knowledge about Ubuntu terminology. I've given a screenshot of an error!

It seems you didn't shut down the Windows properly. Instead, you hibernated Windows. Boot Windows. make sure you choose shutdown and not hibernate. This is what I understood from the error message. If this is not the case, please edit your question with more details. –  user68186 Apr 8 '13 at 17:20

Are you using Windows 8? If so disable fastboot. –  user68186 Apr 8 '13 at 17:37

This message is correct, you are hibernating (not shutting down) Windows, if you mount this filesystem under another OS you risk corrupting it (or corrupt your Windows installation). The safest bet is to solve this from the Windows side. –  Javier Rivera Apr 8 '13 at 17:40

Are you sure you haven't set the default shutdown action in windows to hibernate. In windows open the program cmd and type shutdown -s into it. That will shutdown windows properly after a minute of waiting. Then ubuntu should let you mount the partition. –  handuel Apr 8 '13 at 18:18
