A strange problem happening after update. After I updated Ubuntu 12.10, I restarted. After boot, i realized that there isn't any login screen at all. I mean no login screen, just an Ubuntu background. I tried restarting several times, but still no login screen

Are you using the Ubuntu Gnome Remix, or are you using a regular Ubuntu install with Gnome? This will make a difference when others try to answer your question. Also, this problem isn't nearly as serious as you think ;) –  bntser Apr 7 '13 at 3:58
Please don't scream at us. Thanks. –  0xC0000022L Apr 7 '13 at 5:10
In addition to the questions mentioned by bntser, are you using any PPA's such as the gnome-team/gnome3 PPA? –  Matt B Apr 11 '13 at 16:30
login screen not coming.so can you enter in your system without login into it or you cant login and its keeps on booting the whole day?if so you can check for installed lightdm display manager. –  black Feb 18 at 5:28

If you would like to use the GDM login screen (Gnome's default), install it using these commands:

sudo apt-get install gdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

In order to do this you will have to press CTRL-ALT-F1 and login with your username and password.

If you want to use LightDM, try this:

sudo apt-get install lightdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
