After an unsuccessful attempt to install 12.10 desktop via graphic install, decided to install 12.04 LTS with the alternate CD and text mode. (I have S3 ProSavage DDR graphics, graphical installer scrambles video.) However, after successful partitioning, base-install, packages, etc, it ejects the CD and we reboot. I boot to a login shell on tty1. Looks good, only, I didn't set up any accounts during the install! I don't know what to login with. Elsewhere in this forum I learned that the root account is disabled. I'm new to Linux, and taking a college class in it, but I'm still in my 1st month. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's odd. The installer should have asked for a username and password, if it had not, I doubt that the installation was completed successfully. Check out the howto for more info. Can you add full specs to the question. Given the fact the the machine is probably rather old, it should be safe to recommend Xubuntu instead. –  mikewhatever Apr 5 '13 at 18:51

@mikewhatever i'd suggest Lubuntu, not Xubuntu, as Lubuntu is lighter than Xubuntu. –  Thomas W. Apr 5 '13 at 19:00
