After I poked some in sources.list adding cassandra and so I get an apt-get error:

Were you following some tutorial? Usually repositories for Debian are not suitable for Ubuntu. –  guntbert Apr 1 '13 at 20:41

If you only want to get rid of that error you should disable the last line (the one with non-free towards the end) by putting a # at the beginning.

Then you type sudo apt-get update and all should be well. I there remain errors you would disable the two lines before too.
