I used the update manager per the procedure to upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 12.10. The update manager was replaced by the software center, and I still have 12.04 LTS.

This is strange... I think we need more details. Did you receive any error messages? Can you see errors or what happened in /var/log/dpkg.log? Are you in the sudo group (you can check typing id in a terminal)? –  laurent Mar 22 '13 at 0:03

1st comment was to try to investigate the problem but to upgrade you can try in a terminal: sudo apt-get update followed by sudo do-release-upgrade –  laurent Mar 22 '13 at 0:07

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you are still on Ubuntu 12.04?

To check, type into terminal, cat /etc/issue This will display the current version.

If it still is, then try laurent's suggestion.
