I want to switch to en_US.UTF-8 locale. The system default is (in /etc/default/locale) is en_US. How can I do this, when I don't have super user privileges?
The page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Locale presents two methods: editing /etc/default/locale, and using
update-locale, but they both require super user privileges.
A less elegant solution I came up with, is adding
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 to ~/.bashrc. The problem with this solution is that gnome-terminal still sees the system default. Every time I start gnome-terminal, I have to switch the character encoding from Terminal > Set Character Encoding > Unicode (UTF-8).
