I have a new 1 GB external hard drive which I was trying to partition with Gparted. Evidently I did something wrong and now it does not show up in My Computer or in Ubuntu. How can I repair it?

Your going to have break down and tell us exactly what you did wrong. Come on buddy it'll feel better. Trust me. –  shakabra Mar 8 '13 at 0:47

I recently formatted an external harddrive so I could install ubuntu on it using Gparted (long story, irrelevant), but I created 2 separate new partitions to the already existing one. I installed ubuntu on one of those partitions and left the other one unformatted. That unformatted partition doesn't show up in my computer in windows or in nautilus on ubuntu. I think the partition needs to be formatted before you have access to it for file storage. Gparted should be able to do this. Sorry, I wanted to post this answer as a comment, but I don't know how.

Well, if it is the issue, don't know if it is, just run Gparted sudo gparted select the drive from the dropdown, should be something like/dev/sda/ or /dev/sdb/

If no partitions are showing up when you plug in the drive, then I assume all of the drive is marked as unallocated.go to the partition menu and select new and set it up however you like. hopefully this will fix your problem.

Thanks for your answer Nil. In answer to similar question they suggested to run sudo fdisk -l. With ext drive plugged in, this is the output: –  user135658 Mar 8 '13 at 1:28

Never mind Nil. It is showing up in Gparted now and I was able to partition it (space was unallocated). Thanks for your help! –  user135658 Mar 8 '13 at 1:53

^.^ it was coincidence that I ran into the same problem recently. Glad to be of help –  Nil Mar 8 '13 at 1:55

Well, if you're still around Nil, I have another question. I have created 2 partitions, the first one as the primary partition, the second one as an extended partition. The first one shows up my home folder file list but the second one does not. Gparted lists the space I alloted for it as "unallocated." Should I have called it a primary partition? –  user135658 Mar 8 '13 at 2:06

Never mind again! I think I've got this thing figured out. I didn't think I should call the second partion a primary partition but when I did, everything seems to be OK now. Both partitions are showing up OK in Home folder. Thanks again! –  user135658 Mar 8 '13 at 2:14
