Under the impression that having the disc image in while the computer boots would take me to a menu screen where I could choose to boot ubuntu or windows, it just went to a loading screen.

It stayed like that for a while and then went to a blank GREY screen and did nothing.

I restarted and now the computer will not boot. Nothing appears on screen and the computer gives long beeps.

I am on an Advent 3411 PC CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz BIOS Phoenix-Award BIOS. Motherboard Microstar MS-6579 Memory 512MB DDR PC2100 RAM

I hear this is a RAM issue, have checked beep codes, reseated RAM and video card, checked it wasn't overheating... but it was working fine with xp, then the Ubuntu CD touches my computer and now I have a hardware failure????

Indeed it sounds like a hardware failure to me. They tend to fail at strange times. –  user68186 Mar 5 '13 at 20:41
