I had empathy working before but lost it to some bad advice from another post now I have no ability to chat from my desktop and I need to communicate with my Professors at school. Thanks in advance!

Pidgin is a good software. You can use it with multiple protocols. You can install empathy by sudo apt-get install empathy too ;)

Well there are a lot of instant messengers available that can solve your problem such as Pidgin, emesene, gwibber etc..,(which can be downloaded from Ubuntu Software Centre) and in my opinion empathy isn't that bad! In fact among the currently available IM's for ubuntu i prefer empathy the most!
