I spent over 8 hours trying set this up with no luck so I tore everything down and I'm starting from scratch. Here's what I've got.
Fresh un-touched install of Ubuntu-server on a dedicated Dell. I named it Gandalf. Rasberry pi with a fresh installation of open-elec. Various other Windows 7 Machines.
So, we're starting fresh here. I haven't touched anything. I feel like I've read every tutorial out there and tried configuring samba a million different ways but I can never get it to work just right.
Here's what I'm shooting for... Anyone on my home network with a Windows machine should be able to see Gandalf on the network and access the shares without a password, regardless of what workgroup they are on. Windows users on the workgroup specified in the smb settings should have linux group level permissions for the directory (This is not essential, I'm almost certain it's possible but I can live without it for now). Gandalf should appear in the XBMC file manager and I should be able to add shares as media sources, no password necessary.
Again, I'm starting from scratch. I've spent a lot of time on this so I'm pretty comfortable with configuring smb in the shell but please assume I know nothing as I may be missing some crucial step.
If someone could walk me through setting this up successfully, I can not describe how grateful I would be.
