I can move my mouse around, see wall paper and top panel or switch to ctrl-alt-F1. But I cannot click anything nor do any key combination work.

What should I do beside restart lightdm? I chose to suspend because I don't want to lose my data. If I have to restart lightdm every time resume from suspend, I'd rather shutdown my computer.

how can i get normal suspend functionality back?

im using lenovo e420 laptop intel hd 4000 graphic card and native driver (or no driver? at least I never install anything manually)

PS: I just tried unity --reset and it took forever to complete so I decided to stop it. However, when I switch back, I found the chrome comes out but still cannot click on panel or wall paper. But key bindings work fine inside chrome

I have something similar, only I have no wall paper or top panel either. My whole screen is black and I can only move my mouse. No keys or clicks help, and like you all I can do is restart lightdm. –  MrHug Feb 23 '13 at 16:08

We need more information before anyone can answer this question. Please edit your question with: Is it a notebook or a desktop? what kind of graphics card does your computer have? Are you using any proprietary graphics card driver? If so, which version and how did you install it? –  user68186 Feb 23 '13 at 16:33

You can have a look at /var/log/syslog Maybe there is an error message. Hibernate and Suspend have been problematic on Linux for ages. It's working quite well knowadays, but maybe not with every hardware. –  Benjamin Maurer Feb 23 '13 at 18:10
