I'm looking to install Ubuntu 12.10 so I can dual boot with Windows 8. I have an Inspiron R17 Special Edition laptop with 2x 1TB internal hard drives. I intend to keep Windows 8 on the first hard drive and install Ubuntu 12.10 on the second hard drive.
As the laptop is using UEFI is there anything I should look out for that could trip the installation up? I intend to disable secure boot in BIOS but I am unsure on a few other UEFI BIOS settings.
What settings should be set for the following UEFI and Legacy Options. ( Current options are displayed in bold )
Secure Boot = Disabled ; Load Legacy Option Rom = Enabled ; Boot List Option = UEFI or Legacy
As I am using two independent drives would I be safer taking the Windows 8 drive out, installing Ubuntu on the backup drive and then using F10 to select either Main or Backup drive. Would I then be able to update the Boot Loader menu to display Windows 8 and Ubuntu or would both drives need to be installed at the time of installation?
I'm not up to speed with UEFI and know I will screw up my windows 8 partitions if I just wade in. I wouldn't be so worried doing this if Optimus was supported with Linux but it looks like Nvidia \ Bumblebee are a way from providing a polished solution.
Sorry if this appears to be a duplicate of one of the 100 dual boot questions but I wanted to make sure that 2 independent hard drives wouldn't create additional hurdles when bypassing UEFI.
Thanks for any help you are able to provide.
