how do I get Ubuntu to upgrade from version 10.04 to version 12.10? It seems like the installation CD just stops reading at some point and all that is displayed on the desktop is UBUNTU 12.10 . . . .

with no further action not even from the HDD!?

can you give some hardware-info ? (CPU/ RAM / Graphic card) –  Joris Donders Feb 19 '13 at 13:59
Official upgrade path is 10.04 ==> 12.04, LTS to LTS only. You will need to upgrade from 12.04 ==> 12.10, though I would recommend backing up /home, biting the bullet & doing a fresh install as upgrading can have all sorts of teething problems. –  fleamour Feb 19 '13 at 14:04
