Just been trying to install ubuntu from a live DVD. The install process seemed to go ok but when I tried to boot after the install it wouldn't load- it just stuck on a blank screen with a flashing underscore. It runs all right on the 'try without installing' option but won't actually boot. Any advice on what might be causing this?

How did you installed it (something else or erasing all the disk)? Also, what graphic card do you have? –  Lucio Feb 18 '13 at 22:48
There is something weird in your description. After installing, there should not be any 'try without installing' option. Can you describe the steps you've followed so far? Also, updating your computer firmware/BIOS/EFI usually fixes booting problems on Ubuntu. –  Jorge Suárez de Lis Feb 18 '13 at 23:47
I appear to have same problem - installation was OK then it was time to restart - just froze up. Waited a good 10 mins then did a cold start - and it asked for a password ( cryptsetup )- but it closed before I had time to ente- r all the numbers. Said dev/mapper/ubuntu-root does not exist. Am right now doing a new installation without encrypting password –  user133623 Feb 19 '13 at 19:03
