Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've been going on forum after forum looking for some help with these issues, but have found nothing to help me at all. Every time I thought I found something that could help, it's either written so poorly that it's unreadable, or the thread turns into a flame war because the asker compared Ubuntu to Windows. So, I'm hoping some of you guys can help me out.

First: The graphical bugs. Half the time I can't read text because it looks like it's covered in bytecode or just black boxes. I read somewhere this is just caused because it's using the Intel HD Graphics on my processor (i5-3570k). So I downloaded the latest drivers for my Nvidia Card (GT 440). However, the drivers are a .run file which apparently cannot be executed. Someone explain to me how to install these drivers so I can actually see what I'm doing.

Next: Ubuntu is ridiculously slow. I have one of the best processors on the market, have more than adequate RAM (8GB), and it's on a SATA 3.0 port on my Motherboard. So why the heck is it running slower than Windows Vista on a 500Mhz processor? Can I get some help speeding up the OS?

Another Issue: My internet is slower than Dial-Up, on Ubuntu and I'm not kidding. I get 4MB/sec download on Windows, but 26kB/sec on Ubuntu. (I'm also using Ethernet for my network connection) Something's got to have gone wrong.

Specifications:

Processor: Intel Ivy Bridge Quad Core Processor i5-3570k @ 3.4GHz

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G41 ATX Motherboard

RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX Dual-Channel DDR3 RAM @ 1600MHz

Graphics Card: Asus Nvidia GeForce GT 440 @ 822MHz 1GB GDDR5

Can you give your hardware specs? – Olcay Ertaş Feb 17 at 1:14

To update your nvidia drivers, I would recommend going into terminal and running sudo apt-get install nvidia-current. This will install the latest nvidia drivers for your video card. That's what I did earlier today and it's worked out great so far! In regards to it running slow, mine is as well and it shouldn't be. If you go into terminal and run gnome-system-monitor you can watch what's going on. – Webnet Feb 17 at 1:18

1: It's preferable that you limit each question to one specific issue. It's cleaner that way. You can ask a reasonable number of questions per day. I'm sure there's a cap but that shouldn't concern us. 2: If you provide additional information, please do so by editing your question and not by means of comments. – vasa1 Feb 17 at 2:45
