Did you also pair the BT speaker with another device? Is the speaker set into "pairing mode"? –  Takkat Feb 12 '13 at 10:02

This only happens with a Conceptronic bt adapter. Speaker connects with an alternative adapter. Both adapters are Cambridge Silicon Radio chipsets - one works, the other doesn't. Both adapters connect successfully to a different speaker. The issue seems: bluetoothd[2441]: src/device.c:device_bonding_complete() bonding 0xb70392b0 status 0x05 bluetoothd[2441]: src/device.c:device_cancel_bonding() Canceling bonding request for 10:B7:F6:00:46:40 –  castalla Feb 12 '13 at 11:19

I stumbled more on Matching key not found indicating there is an issue with the stored pairing keys. Try to completely remove the speakers from the known devices and redo pairing either from BT settings or see this answer for command line bluez. –  Takkat Feb 12 '13 at 11:51

I never get to the point of entering any keys - bluez-simple-agent just prints out the Authorization Failed line. So there are no keys stored anywhere. Can't use gui as PC is headless without x11. –  castalla Feb 12 '13 at 13:43

Added HCIdump data - sorry no formatting. –  castalla Feb 12 '13 at 14:05
