I used to have sound using Ubuntu 10.04 but after I installed some software from synaptic package manager all the sound is gone. I upgraded it to Ubuntu 12.10 hoping that would fix it but still the same. Please help me to fix this issue. This terminal output might help:

mmm.. So lspci shows you have an audio controler. It just isnt recognized by Alsa, it seems. Can you go to a terminal and type in 'alsamixer' (without the quotes) And hit F6. Is the soundcard listed then? If so you can select it by up- or down arrow. Let me know. – matv1 Feb 8 at 18:27
I wrote a guide a year ago which might help: docs.google.com/document/d/… – MiJyn Feb 8 at 19:02
@matv1 thank you for reply i try the command you gave me but their is nothing listed. "dator@dator-HP-Compaq-dc5100-MT-PW100ET:~$ alsamixer~ cannot open mixer: No such file or directory" thank you again. – jakemann Feb 23 at 16:28
