I've tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 as dualboot, but failed somewhere in the process. I followed this guide: http://www.avoiderrors.net/dual-boot-windows-8-and-ubuntu-12-10/ (Mostly the youtube video)
I have a SSD as my C:/ (called sdb in Ubuntu) and a HDD as D:/ (sda in Ubuntu).
I created a bootable USB stick with UNetBootin (my laptop doesn't have a CD drive) and was easily able to boot into Ubuntu and try it by editting the BIOS setting to boot from USB. Everything was working fine at that point.
Then i went onto repartitioning my SSD while in Windows 8. I opened Disc Management and made a new partition with 15GB of space, which it easily did.
I put in my USB stick and booted into Ubuntu (editting the BIOS menu as before). I hit Install Ubuntu and selected the "Something else" when asked for Installation type.
I made the swap file for 1500 MB, logical, beginning of the space and selected swap area. And i also made the actual Ubuntu partition as Primary, beginning of the space and Ext4 journaling system and selected the root folder.
I also selected the sda in the "Device for boot loader installation" (It was the default setting), but i'm thinking i might have been wrong here. As my SSD is named "sdb" in Ubuntu, and that's where Windows is installed.
When i tried to install it, it gave me an error saying i needed a "Reserved BIOS Boot Area" with at least 1 MB of space.. it said it might fail or might not, so i gave it a try. It didn't work.
Now when i boot my computer up it simply goes into Windows 8 without mentioning Ubuntu. But when i try to reinstall Ubuntu, it says it already has both Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10 fully installed, though i am unable to boot into Ubuntu (not even though the BIOS, where i normally selected to boot from USB).
I hope someone here can help me out (:
