Ok so I've download the ubuntu iso. What I want is to install it to the ssd I have sitting in a usb external hardrive attached to my windows machine. Then when done Im going to put it in a laptop as a replacement for a failed drive. Not sure what the correct procedure for getting the iso onto the ssd is?

It is usually better to install the os on the intended hardware. That being said I assume you don't have a CD drive on the laptop, you could use a USB drive to install Ubuntu – David Feb 8 at 1:44
