I have been trying to figure out Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS on an ASUS N76VZ laptop with two 500GB Harddisks. (I have a lot of problems with the UEFI boot and getting Windows 7 and Ubuntu to get along)
uname -a Linux N76VZ 3.2.0-37-virtual #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I am a bit of an Ubuntu noob and have been having problems getting some of the hardware to behave. I managed to get the wired ethernet to work by blindly following instructions to install some stuff - download some other stuff and issue a "modprobe alx" command. I then tried to do the same sort of thing to get my nvidia hdmi out working. 761 sudo modprobe nvidia_current 762 sudo service lightdm restart
And the USB mouse (and God knows what else) dies.
I have tried to remove some of the nvidia drivers hoping to get the usb port back but I suspect I'm making it worse. The ports must still be working because I was able to boot up my backup from and external USB drive (sadly the backup was created with Clonezilla after the command, and not before - the original is still on the computer but inaccessible or at least unbootable.).
I would like to know how to determine and undo the damage I did. I can access logs and I ran lsmods, but I have no idea what to look for! It does seemed to have messed up Virtual Box and also my sound. No devices seem to still be there.
