Never mind, please disregard; as it turns out I was out of disk space and was unaware of it. I removed some files and all is okay. Thanks

I feel my problem started after in did the updates and rebooted today.

I can't get out of the KDE login screen except for Console which works.

In Console, I effectively changed root and user passwords and rebooted to no avail.

From How to Remove KDE Login Screen?

I attempted to make Gnome login screen the default boot screen with

#update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

I checked manual plymouth

#update-initramfs -u
#update-grub

rebooted and the KDE login screen still occurs
