What you need is the msttcorefonts package.

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Looks like I was able to answer my own question with a bit of guided research. Here is the package: msttcorefonts Install msttcorefonts

Or command line instructions:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
sudo fc-cache -fv

This link explains in detail how to reinstall core fonts:

I don't know if this will help you but try http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/09/ubuntu-font-set-as-default-for-ubuntu-10-10/

Hope that works.

That is the ubuntu font. I found this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_fonts_for_the_Web. Theses are Microsoft core fonts. They are executable files, doesn't help me much with ubuntu, but it seems like I need core fonts. –  Keith Groben Feb 6 '11 at 4:05
