Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

After login I get just the wallpaper screen with no top bar, activities etc and a frozen mouse. Can access terminal window but not sure what to do (did try one suggestion to stop compiz but no result). Have tried various start up options in safe mode but no changes.

Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit on Lenovo T500. Dual OS. Running Gnome Shell. Have been using dual monitors.

Any help appreciated as at point on reinstalling but don't want to loose data.

Could also be defective Nvidia drivers (if you use Nvidia graphics, of course) - see askubuntu.com/a/248380/5786 –  Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Jan 30 '13 at 21:45
@Seth I don't think the mouse is frozen in that situation. –  Eliah Kagan Jan 31 '13 at 6:26
