running 12.04 on DQ35JO board speakers plugged into back of machine in the on board sound header and USB headset in front usb port.
Switching via the sound settings was a breeze until now..
had just done a software update. built in speakers are now missing from the sound settings output tab it just lists USB headset.
everything is unmuted and has volume set correctly.
all the alsamixer settings are enabled, nothing was greyed out except beep which I enabled. auto mute is disabled on default, intel HDA and Logitech USB headset.
prior to this I had logitech usb headphones and speakers as output devices under Sound Settings -> output -> play sound using"
the system reboots ok on 3.2.0-34-generic and the upgraded -35 and plays the bootup music on both kernels but after Desktop login.. nothing.

I can switch and listen through either speakers or headset through xbmc (which is set to PA defaults for audio output) ok if I click on the playback tab in pavucontrol and click on the xbmc audio stream option and switch between USB Headset and Built in analogue stereo.
If I choose Built in Analogue stereo in pavucontrol and get speakers going and then use the Sound settings -> output tab option on the desktop.. USB headset remains the only entry and it is highlighted.
If I click on it headset plays the sound stream. and I have to go back to pavucontrol/playback tab to change it,
