Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm struggling to give a ubuntu access to a windows 8 machine, file and print sharing is switched on and the ask for passwords is off. I even switched off the firewall of windows 8 and my anti virus program. I added the rules for the programs I need to access windows 8 on the firewall. What else can I do? And I'm using xp in ubuntu on virtualbox for the same reasons. I see the computers, but as soon I try to access the windows 8 computer in the xp virtualbox OS, it gives me the no access error or in ubuntu is asks for a password. Please help me in this.

What kind of access do you want to provide Ubuntu in Windows? Remote desktop? File sharing? The title is very broad, but the body indicates you just want file sharing. Please be specific and complete (authentication options in Windows for example) and include the exact messages you got. –  gertvdijk Jan 28 '13 at 13:50

Thank you, Sorry about that. I need file sharing access in windows 8, password sharing is off in win8, file and print sharing in win8 is on, but I still don't get the access I need. It keeps on asking for log on details, doesn't except any. I don't know what I'm missing or what is wrong. –  Orosjopie Jan 29 '13 at 13:43

I've also have been playing around with gadmin samba, I do see the necessary win8 machine, but It keeps on asking for log in details and password. –  Orosjopie Jan 31 '13 at 11:04
