I just updated my kernel to 3.7.0-7 from the Ubuntu software updater. However after I rebooted, I got to a blank desktop with only a wallpaper. I had this issue before I installed my nvidia drivers on 3.5.0-17 however now when I try to install the drivers I get an error saying Error! bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.7.0-7 (x8 kernel package linux-headers-3.7.0-7-generic is not supported. Please help, nouveau doesn't work on my system also because I get a GPU lockup.

How do you get kernel 3.7.0-7 in the updater? It's not a release from Ubuntu in either way. Are you using a PPA? And what Nvidia drivers are you using? – gertvdijk Jan 27 at 18:46
After installing Ubuntu, the software updater notified me that I had like 237 updates or something like that, so I just updated everything. I tried using nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates and nvidia-experimental-310 but none of them work. In an attempt to solve the issue on 3.5.0-17 I did use a PPA, but it didn't work. I guess I did not remove it after that. – Elias Jan 27 at 19:02
Try installing the linux-headers-$(uname -r) package, and then reinstalling the driver. That should work for the 3.5xx kernel. – mikewhatever Jan 27 at 19:16
Hey mikewhatever thanks for the help, but I am on the 3.7.0-7 kernel not 3.5xx and installing Linux headers for that kernel doesn't help. – Elias Jan 27 at 19:48
Revert the actions you took on the PPA. Don't add random PPAs if you don't know what it is for. It's very very hard to get support on your issue this way. How do I remove a PPA added via command-line? – gertvdijk Jan 27 at 22:11
