Ubuntu has crashed and will not reboot. I have to re-install Ubuntu from a CD. Will I lose my data, programs, favourites, etc. Can I recover and save all this stuff or must I start from scratch every time.

could you clarify what you mean by wont reboot? How has it crashed? What error message (if any) are you getting? Is it just a grub problem? A little more detail would be very helpful, as you may be able to restore without reinstalling.. –  ScottC Jan 23 '13 at 10:11
Could you add more infomation about how does it crash or at least some sort of error message when booting your computer –  Ubuntu Jan 23 '13 at 10:23
can you try boot from a live cd and mount your computer HDD. browse to the folder /home and your files should be there. back-up your files. If you tell us more info on the crash we can help you to [uncrash] ubuntu for you and you don't have to reinstall –  skumara Jan 23 '13 at 11:02
