How do I fix a “Problem with MergeList” error when trying to do an update?

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 in my PC and all efforts to update the system have not been successful. The Ubuntu software center cannot open and every time I open the package manager I get an error message.

E:Encountered a section with no Package: header,
E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages,
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

This question was marked as an exact duplicate of an existing question.

I assume you've tried from the terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Which will update your sources and then pull the new packages down. If not you will want to edit the sources. I tend to do this using the Software Centre, but it is possible using the Terminal.

You can edit your sources using terminal, as detailed in this post. http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4950249&postcount=3
