Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have an ubuntu system which uses a USB Drive as the hard disk. It runs a a few applications continuously (the idea is that it should run for months without interation), no graphical user interface.

After a few days however, the system starts acting weird and commands such as kill, killall and reboot have no effect at all (yes as root).

The kill commands don't actually kill anything and reboot just tells me the system is going to reboot, but it doesn't actually happen.

If I pull the power and start the system again... it runs fine for a few days.

I've checked memory and cpu usage... nothing out of the ordinary there

I haven't even got a clue where to begin looking to solve this issue
