I'm trying to download the MATLAB program through the software center on Ubuntu 12.04. The installation has stalled half way through (in the applying changes phase), but I can't cancel it. I've tried restarting the computer, but the download still shows and I can't remove it. It also prevents me from downloading any other programs on software center. What can I do to remove the item from my software center download list?

Update:

I tried the solutions posted here and I get another error:

possible duplicate of What does this red icon on my panel mean? – Anwar Jan 19 at 16:47
@Anwar: This is not a duplicate, because I am not facing the problem of a red icon on my panel. There is no such red icon anywhere on my screen. – Paul Jan 19 at 16:54
Have you tried the solution? I think, your problem is same, but I may be wrong. – Anwar Jan 19 at 16:58
@Anwar: I updated my question with the errors I incurred using your suggestion. – Paul Jan 19 at 17:07
Please post the complete output, not only the last lines. – guntbert Jan 19 at 17:37
