Once I plug-in the dongle(MTS) there is no folder for it in /media or elsewhere. Also I could not install the software for USB modem.

Please try opening a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and running dmesg | tail, then connect the USB drive, wait about 10 seconds, then run it again. You can edit your question to report if there are any differences, and if so, what lines were added after you plugged in the device.
