I watched Update Manager install the new kernel files for v3.2.0-36 (kernel-image, kernel-headers, etc. - it was able to pull them down over the network), it rebooted, and now I have no network.

My eth0 connection shows no IP address, netmask, or default gateway. I can't ping my default gateway ("Network is unreachable").

I'm working the possibility in parallel that some change to the port on the router happened magically this morning, but I doubt that is the culprit. I've changed my network cable; no change in behavior.

I've about to deleted and recreated the eth0 connection; no change in behavior.

Any other suggestions? I'm stuck because I share the keyboard, mouse, and monitor on this server with my Windows laptop.

Please provide more information. Do you use static IP addresses or DHCP? – qbi Jan 18 at 19:01
Static IP. I'm on a non-standard VLAN in the switch. So, I re-loaded 12.04 from the DVD and my networking is working. I'm patching right now and am curious if the networking "breaks" again after kernel 3.2.0-36 is installed. More as it happens... – Bruce Mohler Jan 18 at 19:48
Do you use the NetworkManager or is your interface configured through etc/network/interfaces? Maybe there are conflicts. – qbi Jan 18 at 19:51
I'm using the NetworkManager (or at least the icon on the top right of the screen (the two arrows, one up and one down). – Bruce Mohler Jan 18 at 21:02
Hmmm. So, re-loaded 12.04 and fully patched with the 3.2.0-36 kernel and my networking is still working. I'm guessing there was some "glitch" (bug, defect) when Update Manager kicked off earlier this morning. – Bruce Mohler Jan 18 at 21:06
