i loaded ubuntu on dvd for test derive on win xp laptop...looked around ubuntu and decided to read more about using the dual os boot. Removed dvd. Restarted laptop in win xp and found desktop, passwords, bookmarks, etc all reverted to new install state. found my files buried in sub files. it also seems that my hard drive is now reading incorrect size (i think). help!!! how do i get things back to the way they were on win xp.

By taking it for a test drive, do you mean just running Ubuntu from the live DVD? –  Flimm Jan 18 '13 at 17:58
Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! Running Ubuntu from the Live image does not change anything on the hard drive unless you explicitly made changes to it, like running partition tools, the Ubuntu installer, etc. Please clarify the actions you took in "the test drive". Your question is not answerable in its current state. Add these and possibly other information by editing your question. –  gertvdijk Jan 18 '13 at 18:00
Thanks. I had two choices from the dvd 1) try ubuntu and2) install ubuntu. I selected 1). When it opened the ubuntu desktop I opened the firefox and went online. Then i looked at the word program and the settings options. I looked at my hard drive and located some photos and opened them with a built in ubuntu viewer. i closed all the open apps and exited ubuntu, removed the dvd and restarted the computer. –  mike Jan 18 '13 at 18:06
