Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am able to install applications with sudo apt-get install <packagename> and sudo dpkg -i <packagename> through the terminal, but not with Ubuntu's Software Center.

When I try to install a package either straight from the database available or a debian package I downloaded it doesn't work. I press the install button, and it asks for my password and says Installing..., but then after a few moments it stops and goes back to its previous state and the install buttons is a available again. Also the total size text below keeps saying Calculating... and never finishes. I don't know what is wrong, and would appreciate the help.

This is how it looks before I press install and put in my password.

This is what it looks like for a couple moments after I press install and put in my password, and then it goes back to looking like the previous picture.

Notice, it just keeps saying Calculating... for total size.

Have you looked at ~/.cache/software-center.log? There should be a relevant error message that you can edit into your question. On an install error, SC logs the error and re-enables the install button. The package size info query runs asynchronously so it's failure is not being directly caused by the install failure, but that both are failing suggests SC can't connect to Apt. You might see an error like: Can not get aptdaemon client –  chaskes Jan 17 '13 at 23:56
