Whenever I shut down my laptop down, and quick closing the lid right after hitting "Shut down", Ubuntu registered the lid closing and arranged for suspend (standby)!

The next time opening the lid, Ubuntu continued the shutdown process.

I know this is a problem some Mac Users have, maybe Windows too. So it is not uncommon.

However is there a way I can prevent such a thing in software rather than waiting before closing the lid?

Good question, but I think this should be reported as a bug, as I cannot think of anyone actually wanting this behaviour. Found the bug report: LP Bug #471457: Shutdown does not have priority over suspend/hibernation Get this bug reopened I would say! – gertvdijk Jan 17 at 17:18

Install the gnome-tweak-tool and set it up so that it does not suspend when the lid is closed.

That's very short and not very explanatory, I'm afraid. Could you include the essential steps to take? There's a lot of possible tweaking in this tool. And how does this deal with the issue? Disabling the whole suspend-on-lid-close should persist, I guess. And wouldn't need this tool to change anyway. – gertvdijk Jan 17 at 21:59
I do want in to suspend when closing the lid. However I don't want it to suspend during the shutdown procedure. – JavaJens Jan 17 at 23:09
