How to install software or upgrade from old unsupported release?

When I try to check for any software in the update manager I get:

failure to recover jaunty backport files

it states they cannot be found :(...

I can neither update to any new 12.04 software nor upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 if I wish. Please help.
