I am using ubuntu via usb to try it out. I can't use wifi. Every time I try to install updates it fails half way through. When I restart all of my setting are lost. Do I need to install in order to get this to work? I like some of the features but in this state it is unusable.

Did you make a persistent USB drive with Ubuntu? If it's not persistent all settings and installed apps with be erased after you reboot. See this how to. –  Seth Jan 16 '13 at 2:41
Yes, you need it installed properly to install updates and wireless and graphics drivers. Ubuntu from USB is intended for trying it out, hardware testing, etc. –  mikewhatever Jan 16 '13 at 2:43
But what does this mean: "Every time I try to install updates it fails half way through ."? –  user25656 Jan 16 '13 at 2:51
