I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and just attached new Arctic Sound S111 USB speakers. There is persistent background static in the sound that changes in intensity depending on what I'm doing on the computer. I notice similar static while using headphones and having a USB flash drive plugged in, so I assume it is an error with the USB. I've tried rebooting with the device installed, installing phonon-backend-vlc, and muting the microphone using alsamixer, all to no avail.

Does anyone have any advice about this? Thanks in advance.
