I used Unetbootin to have ubuntu to temporarily boot my computer via USB after my windows OS crashed. It has worked fine, but now I want to install it permanently. I used the install ubuntu option on the desktop (and on failing, from the Unetbootin boot menu too) and the install commenced without errors and completed to the point where it said that I needed to restart. I clicked restart now but on doing so it once again booted from the USB, and on changing booting priority, it gave ab error of no OS being present. On booting via USB in trial mode, The OS drive had been used up by ubuntu and I can see the files, that replaced windows, yet ubuntu has not been installed.

What steps do I follow to complete the installation?

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! Any reason why to use an older Ubuntu release rather than the latest stable (12.10)? And if you need 10.04, then why .1? There's 10.04.4 already. – gertvdijk Jan 15 at 10:28
