I have downloaded the desktop version (Ubuntu 12.10 - i386) but i am having problems installing it on my laptop. I have created a 40GB partition for the installation, but I am not able to get beyond "Select partition for installation". ISO image is on a dvd.

I can see the partitions but if i select the 40GB partition, it still get partitioned again!. so the 40GB partition gets 'Formatted'.

I also have windows 7 ultimate installed.

Can you boot to the installer? Do you use the simple or advanced partitioning? –  Addison Montgomery Jan 12 '13 at 20:00

Did you actually burn the ISO to a CD? Or how did you start the install process? Please edit your question to provide those informations. –  guntbert Jan 12 '13 at 20:14

What do you mean when you say that you can't get through "Select partition for installation"? What happens at that step? It doesn't show any partitions, is the next step disabled, ...? –  sierrasdetandil Jan 12 '13 at 20:29
