The installer runs through the install until the part where you enter your name and password info. After that I see a spinning circle on the screen for a extended time, and then get this message:

The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run.

After that, it does go to the desktop session. I try to continue with the install and receive the spinning ball.. I left it there for a few hours without any progress.

The Toughbook is a cf-28 p3 800 mhz 30 gig hd 512 ram dvd-rom. It ran win xp & 2000 just fine.

Any suggestions?

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 12.10 is 768 MB of memory and 5 GB of disk space for Ubuntu Desktop. Your laptop does not meet the requirement. I advise you to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS(The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 12.04 is 384 MB of memory for Ubuntu Desktop). – Amras Jan 11 at 7:53
