Let me preface with a thank you and that I am a beginner. Ubuntu 12.04LTS

HP Deskjet 1000-J110 was working great for months. then a few months back started giving me this problem. I have spent DAYS trying to fix this, I have reinstalled all HPLIP, HPCUPS packages. I have tried a bunch of "fixes" to no avail.

It will always print the first few lines of any thing (pdfs, docs, Printer Test page) then stops. sometimes after a few seconds it will print a little more. Out of the last 40 times I have tried to print stuff it has printed a full page 2 times. Mostly it just stops mid print and then the light on the printer starts blinking on and off. After a while the printer will spit out the half printed sheet and the light will keep blinking.

HP toolbox says Device Communication Error Code 5012

Don't really know what to do. I am pretty beginner and have considered (1) not using ubuntu anymore and using my XP install which i dont want to do or (2) trying to reinstall ubuntu.

Super frustrated. Please help.

How are you connecting to the printer - if by cable, try swapping out the cable for a known good one - you might have a hardware issue. Does it work okay under WinXP? –  Clive van Hilten Jan 8 '13 at 18:28

Same problem for me with Canon BX305FW Printer. When I remove the printer from settings, delete the drivers and install it again, it works fine like before, but only for the first page. –  v2r Aug 22 at 15:58
