I'm relatively novice at Ubuntu sysadmin, tried to boot my machine up today and it just sat at a black screen indefinitely (no cursor, nothing, just black). Tried to boot in recovery mode and I see a huge stream of

failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED

And it eventually boots into the recovery console but I'm not really sure what to poke to investigate. Everything worked fine just a couple days ago, I'm not sure whether any updates installed when I last rebooted.

I know this is vague, sorry for that; I don't know what relevant info to give to start debugging. I'm on an ASUS Zenbook UX31A Ultrabook running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

This Ubuntu Bug may be related. Try to check your HDD/SSD health. Also when it hangs, try switching to other pseudo consoles by using crtl+alt+F[1-7]? If so, login and check dmesg for more info. – Terry Wang Jan 8 at 1:15
