I upgraded a computer from 10.04 to 12.04, then did install all updates. It was working fine. Then I did a restart. That was about 5 minutes ago. Now it is hung on the basic purple ubuntu screen. What should I do?

I powered down and then did a fresh start and it worked fine. The problem is with restart. I have tried it several times. I can do a shut down, then start the computer, but I can not do restart. –  user119046 Jan 5 '13 at 19:12

Do you have Nvidia graphics drivers installed? because the nvidia driver doesn't get compiled when a new kernel is installed. Re-installing nvidia-current should solve the problem if the problem is with the graphics driver. –  Mukund Jan 5 '13 at 20:15

I don't know if I have Nvidia graphics drivers installed. How would I find out? –  user119046 Jan 6 '13 at 1:20

I don't understand how a graphic driver problem would effect restart, but not shut down and start. Could you explain? –  user119046 Jan 6 '13 at 1:21
