I get the Lightdm login prompt but for some reason upon successfully login the screen goes black it and drops me back to the lightdm prompt (the desktop never loads).

Anyone know how I might be able to fix this I already tried reinstalling the xubuntu-desktop package.

Logging in as root works, anyone know what I could try? I already tried removing the .Xauthority file

Solved: apparently it could not access .ICEauthority this file became owned by root as well (don't know why) Deleting this file fixes the issue – user118644 Jan 4 at 7:39
