Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free.

I have installed the AMD 12.11 beta drivers on my Ubuntu 12.10 but sadly it does not start anymore and it hangs in the initial purple screen.

Any device,? How can I fix this?

You will have to manually remove the drivers. You can do this by either entering recovery mode or cli mode.

Recovery mode

  1. Select recovery mode at the boot menu. If the boot menu doesn't appear, hold shift right after boot to get it to appear.
  2. When in recovery mode, enable Networking then select "Drop to root shell"
  3. You will need to make your files system readable. Use the mount -rw -o remount / command to make it readable and writable.

CLI mode

  1. To enter CLI mode, when you are at the purple screen press CTRL+ALT+F2
  2. Enter your username and password to log in.

Removing AMD Drivers

  1. Uninstall the drivers using the following commands

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri fglrx-modaliases

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

sudo reboot
